Estimates were obtained by competing risk regression, according to the method of Fine and Gray, taking into account death from other causes as a competing risk. Individuals with an absence of the respective cytopenia or a multilineage cytopenia were used as the reference. Anemia: hemoglobin concentration <13.0 g/dL in men and <12.0 g/dL in women; thrombocytopenia: platelet count <150 × 109/L; neutropenia: neutrophil count <1.8 × 109/L.
Number of individuals with the respective cytopenia evaluable for cause of death.
The multivariable model included age and sex as covariates.
