In both experiments, 2 × 104 cells were injected intravenously, and the mice were killed when moribund. The number of subjects indicated is given as the number of mice that had metastases per the number of mice injected for each indicated organ. The tumor extent indicates the extent of metastases formation: +/− indicates a few isolated tumor cells; +, some foci; ++, some foci and some diffusely spread tumor cells; +++, more foci and more diffusely spread tumor cells; ++++, many foci and many diffusely spread tumor cells. The data were obtained by macroscopic and microscopic analyses. Cells transfected with a control vector were used only for experiment 1.
