Net iron balance = dietary iron intake − (urinary iron + fecal iron). Animals in a negative iron balance are excreting more iron than they are absorbing. To maintain iron balance, 250 to 400 μg Fe/kg/day42 = 1750 to 2800 μg Fe/kg/week must be cleared.
