Wall shear rates were calculated based on the Poiseuille law for a newtonian fluid (γ = 8(Vmean/Dv) where Dv is the venule diameter and Vmean is estimated from the centerline RBC velocities (Vmean = VRBC/1.6). The numbers of rolling and adherent WBCs were determined by 3 counts of 1 minute per venule. WBCs were considered adherent if they remained stationary for more than 30 seconds and were counted over a venular segment of 100 μm. Several venules were recorded per animal, and the averaged values are reported as mean ± SEM. IVM 1, first intravital microscopy viewing period (before TNF-α); IVM 2, second intravital microscopy viewing period (after TNF-α). — indicates that the number of live mice in the group was too small for a reliable determination to be made.
