Levels of erythrocyte free and zinc protoporphyrin IX in washed peripheral RBCs were measured as described in materials and methods. Levels of Zn protoporphyrin were significantly elevated in IRP2-/- animals (P = .01) and IRP1+/- IRP2-/- animals (P = .007). Free protoporphrin IX levels were markedly elevated in IRP2-/- animals (P < .001) and IRP1+/- IRP2-/- animals (P < .001). Data presented as mean values ± standard deviation.
