Hematologic parameters and hepatic iron levels in hbd and wild-type mice. Hemoglobin concentrations (A), hematocrits (B), mean corpuscular volumes (C), and hepatic iron concentrations (D) were measured in 10- to 12-week-old wild-type (C57BL/6J; ) and hbd (▪) mice as described in “Assessment of hematologic parameters and hepatic iron levels.” Some animals were maintained on a diet of normal iron content (“Control Diet”) while others had been on an iron-deficient diet (“Deficient Diet”) from the time of weaning. The data represent the mean ± SEM (n = 5-10; *P < .05; **P < .01 for hbd mice relative to the wild-type group for each diet).
