Mean gelsolin levels with SDs in the 9 patients who died from IPS in the early posttransplantation period are compared with those of the other 15 patients in the cohort (Pā<ā.01). The Pvalues shown in the figure are for pairwise comparisons between the 2 groups at 3, 4, and 5 weeks after transplantation, corrected for multiplicity. One patient, whose gelsolin level was 70 mg/L at week 2, died before the third week. Two other patients, with gelsolin levels of 70 mg/L and 72 mg/L at week 3, did not survive until week 4. A fourth patient, whose gelsolin levels were 94 mg/L at week 3 and 117 mg/L at week 4, died before week 5.
