A hypothetical cohort of 1000 children with SCA and preexisting SCIs followed for 5 years. Events are defined as either SCIs or strokes for children with SCA. The figure depicts the infarct recurrence rate (overt and SCI) based on no therapy (4.5 events per 100 patient years) or regular blood transfusion (2.0 events per 100 patient years).⁷  To provide a frame of reference on the absolute number of children with infarct recurrence, we have included the expected number of strokes in 1000 adults without SCD, but with preexisting untreated atrial fibrillation.
