Intracranial hemorrhage can occur in all compartments within the skull. Intracerebral hematomas occur either spontaneously or traumatically within the brain tissue, whereas subdural and epidural hematomas are often associated with traumatic head injury. Epidural hemorrhage rarely occurs in elderly patients because the dura mater adheres to the bone with increasing age, preventing the formation of hematomas in this compartment.
