sHBZ directly inhibits IFN-γ production in both human and mouse CD4 T cells. Mouse and human CD4 T cells were transduced with recombinant retroviruses or lentiviruses, respectively, expressing sHBZ, and stimulated with PMA and ionomycin or antibodies to CD3 and CD28. Then, intracellular cytokines in living HBZ-expressing CD4 T cells were measured using FACS.
