The reversibility of heparin-induced cancellous bone loss. Rats were injected with vehicle alone (open bars) or unfractionated heparin at a concentration of 0.5 U/g/day (cross-hatched; rising to the right) or 1.0 U/g/day (cross-hatched; rising to the left). On day 28, half of the rats from each group were killed while the other half were allowed to live for an additional 28 days with no further treatment before determining the total epiphyseal area occupied by cancellous bone.
