Expresssion of cell surface syndecan-1 increases HGF binding by ARH-77 cells.

ARH-77^neo and ARH-77^syn-1 cells were incubated with HGF, washed, and labeled with the HGF antibody 3F4 and FITC-conjugated goat antimouse antibody. (A), ARH-77^syn-1cells labeled with an irrelevant antibody and (B) ARH-77^neocells, which do not express syndecan-1, were faintly stained with the anti-HGF antibody, in contrast to (C) ARH-77^syn-1 cells, which express large amounts of syndecan-1 on the surface and were stained with the anti-HGF antibody. (D) ARH-77^syn-1 cells do not bind HGF when they are treated with heparitinase (0.01 U/10⁶ cells, 30 minutes) before HGF incubation.
