Schematic representation of Option 2 by which some patients are offered treatment by allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) soon after diagnosis if they are young and have a suitable donor. Others are deemed ineligible for allo-SCT. The intermediate group is offered initial treatment with STI571 or an STI-containing combination) for a period of months and may proceed to allo-SCT if they are deemed to have failed the ‘trial' of STI571.
