Binding of heparin-conjugates to surfaces of infected erythrocytes.

(A) Heparin–FITC was allowed to bind to a living culture. The pRBC were counterstained with ethidium bromide and visualized by UV microscopy. (B) For electron microscopy, heparin-albumin-gold particles were applied to the specimen as described in “Materials and methods.” Photograph shows cell surface of uninfected RBC (upper part) and pRBC (lower part).
