CME Information - Eighth Edition
Of paramount importance to hematologists and others working in hematology related fields is the need to stay current with the latest advances in the rapidly evolving disciplines of adult and pediatric hematology. The ASH-SAP is designed for self-directed learning and review through utilization of a textbook with case studies, key points, graphics, and a glossary. The activity is self-paced. Learners review and study the materials and then complete related multiple- choice questions in a separate question-and-answer book for self-assessment; the question-and-answer book also provides rationales for the answers for additional review and self-reflection. Extensive bibliographies are provided in the textbook as sources of information and for future reference.
The eighth edition of ASH-SAP is available in a variety of reading and testing formats to best suit your learning and certification needs. All formats contain the following:
- Full-color text that contains the latest advancements in hematology
- Additional case studies within the text to further illustrate and emphasize the clinical applications of core knowledge
- Access to the companion website, which contains the information from the printed text but adds an interactive element, allowing users to move back and forth between questions and critiques, chapter text, and illustrative slides
The online material contains the full content of the printed book presented in a searchable format with hyperlinks to other educational resources, including Hematology, the ASH Education Program. Access to the online version is included with the purchase price of the print package. The printed question-and-answer book is available only with the print package.

Educational objectives
The goals of ASH-SAP are to provide timely clinical updates on new developments in hematology, to help practicing physicians prepare for recertification, and to serve as a tool for board review.
Upon completion of the eighth edition of ASH-SAP, the learner will be able to achieve the following learning objectives corresponding to the 6 online tests:
- Laboratory Hematology and Cellular Therapy (16 credits)
- Apply knowledge of laboratory testing to diagnose and monitor patients with hematologic disorders.
- Develop an appropriate testing algorithm for patients with cytopenias.
- Understand indications for hematopoietic stem cell therapy and potential complications.
- Consultative Hematology (6 credits)
- Apply diagnostic and management techniques for hematologic disorders in women.
- Evaluate and treat hematologic complications of pregnancy
- Address common hematologic consultative questions relevant to surgical, solid organ transplant, and pediatric patients and hematologic complications of nonhematologic diseases.
- Anemia, Iron Physiology, and Iron Disorders (11 credits)
- Apply diagnostic and management strategies for patients with anemia.
- Understand iron physiology and the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of iron disorders.
- Thrombosis and Hemostasis (11 credits)
- Evaluate and manage a patient with a bleeding diathesis using appropriate diagnostic testing and therapeutics.
- Develop an appropriate diagnostic and management strategy for a patient with venous thromboembolism.
- Understand the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnosis of inherited and acquired platelet disorders.
- Myeloid Diseases (16 credits)
- Determine the most appropriate diagnostic strategy, including molecular testing, for a patient with a suspected or newly diagnosed myeloid disorder.
- Understand and apply optimal risk-stratified therapy for myeloid neoplasms and congenital marrow failure syndromes.
- Lymphoid Disorders (15 credits)
- Evaluate a patient with a suspected lymphoid neoplasm using appropriate diagnostic studies.
- Develop an appropriate management strategy for patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed lymphoid neoplasia.

Accreditation and credit designation
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians.
ASH designates this enduring material for a maximum of 75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Physicians who participate in this CME activity but are not licensed in the United States are also eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
To earn these credits, readers must take up to six online tests based on chapters from the book.
ABIM Maintenance of Certification points
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 75 Medical Knowledge points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM’s) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to the ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit
ABPath Continuing Certification
This activity meets the American Board of Pathology’s (ABPath’s) Continuing Certification (CC) requirements for Lifelong Learning (CME).
ABPeds Continuing Certification SAMs
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn up to 75 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics (ABPeds) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABPeds MOC credit.
Claiming CME and ABIM credit
The estimated time to complete this educational activity is 75 hours. To claim CME credit, all learners must complete the self-assessment test(s) of medical knowledge and a program evaluation, all of which are accessed through ASH Academy on Demand. Learners with scores of 80% or better on the self-assessment tests are eligible to claim credit for the activity.
To facilitate personalized learning, the self-assessment for this product is divided into 6 subtests, each of which focuses on a subset of the hematologic field. Successful completion of each test earns the learner a portion of the total 75 credit hours. Learners claim CME and/or CC credit for each test individually
Each test may be taken in one sitting, or a learner may answer some questions, save their progress, and complete the test at a later time.
