Drug-induced thrombocytopenia: MIBS trumps LIBS
Understanding the pathogenesis of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia is the key to better patient management. In this issue of Blood, Bougie and colleagues provide further useful insights into the mechanism of thrombocytopenia caused by arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) mimetic drugs.1
Death of frontline allo-SCT in myeloma
In this issue of Blood, Lokhorst et al report the results of a donor versus no-donor comparison trial, which unambiguously establishes that reduced intensity conditioning allogeneic stem cell transplantation (RIC allo-SCT) should not be offered as part of frontline therapy in multiple myeloma (MM).1
All roads lead to “ome”: defining the DRiPome
BCR/ABL and chromosomal instability: debate resolved
In this issue of Blood, Chakraborty and colleagues provide conclusive proof that primary chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells from patients in chronic phase demonstrate chromosomal instability after DNA damage, suggesting that BCR/ABL, among its myriad described functions, dysregulates nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) starting the progression of cells toward CML blast crisis.1
Too low to measure, infectious nonetheless
In this issue of Blood, Busch and colleagues examine the risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission by plasma collected before HCV is detectable by licensed clinical assays.1
Equal opportunity targeting in chronic GVHD
In this issue of Blood, studies by Rangarajan et al comprehensively analyzing the clonotypic T-cell response provide evidence that the effector T cells that mediate chronic GVHD may have a unique specificity that includes recognition of self.1

An immature reticulocyte, caught in the act of enucleation. The cell was cultured, ex vivo, from adult peripheral blood CD34+ progenitor cells. The authors describe a novel mechanism of reticulocyte maturation through endocytosis of plasma membrane vesicles that fuse with autophagosomes, exocytose, and then are lost by membrane blebbing.
