    Besides their role in the platelet adhesion phase, interactions between GpIbα and von Willebrand Factor (VWF) mediate platelet cross-linking during the last steps of formation of an occlusive thrombus. Accordingly, pharmacological blockade of either GpIbα or the A1 domain of VWF restores vessel patency and improves outcome in a mouse model of ischemic stroke. This image shows a partially disaggregated thrombus in the mouse middle cerebral artery after treatment with an inhibitor of GpIbα-VWF interactions (VWF is in red, platelets [CD41] are in green and nucleus [DAPI] is in blue).
