This may set the future stage for platelet-induced cellular therapy as a treatment for ITP.

Under severe peroxidative conditions, haptoglobin preserves hemoglobin structural integrity and maintains clearance of the Hb-Hp complex by the macrophage scavenger receptor CD163. As a result, oxidative stress-exposed Hb (red) is sequestered within lysosomes (green) as illustrated in the 3-dimensional reconstruction of confocal laser scanning microscopy data (yellow indicates colocalization).
