Image of red fluorescent protein–expressing human umbilical vein endothelial cells (RFP⁺ HUVECs) (red) in coculture with green fluorescent protein–expressing (GFP⁺) MM1S myeloma cells (green) at day 9 of culture in endothelial growth medium on 3-dimensional porous silk scaffolds (purple). GFP⁺ MM1S cell adherence to RFP⁺ HUVECs and incorporation into the capillarylike endothelial cell structures can be observed and may model the early stages of angiogenesis. GFP⁺ MM1S cells are seen clustered and colocalized at endothelial protrusions.
