The stromal vascular fraction (SVF) derived from adipose tissue contains functional hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) capable of differentiating into a variety of hematopoietic lineages in recipient mice. The image shows adipose tissue containing a high density of Sca-1+ (red) and CD45+ (green) cells, surrounding PECAM-1+ (blue) blood vessels. Adipose tissue could be an alternative source for obtaining functional and transplantable HSPCs. See the article by Han et al on page 957.
